Movie Night with Promise Charter School
What a great turnout for the first movie night of this school year. Families enjoyed the Chipmunks while snacking on chips and juice. Thanks to Mr. Orozco for coordinating this event.

PCS Beats Odds by Exceeding Statewide API Targets
For the first time, Promise Charter School’s API score has exceeded 800, a mark rarely achieved by schools in southeast San Diego. Principal Jose Orozco was brought to Promise Charter School in August of 2009. One of his first priorities was student achievement and school sustainability. Orozco noticed the API scores fluctuated each year with the low at 716. This year, the school’s API score is 806.“Leading the best performing school in all of southeast San Diego is both a privilege and a phenomenal experience not taken lightly. We have been entrusted by our community to prepare our students for their future,” said Orozco. “This is personal. Growing up in this community, I understand the many challenges our students face,” said Orozco.
Promise Charter School API Scores:
2005: 716
2006: 749
2007: 732
2008: 791
2009: 769
2010: 806
Orozco believed it was critical for the school to show a steadily increasing API score. Even more pressing, was a letter the board received from the San Diego County Office of Education warning of impending program improvement status for Promise Charter School in early 2010. Amidst resistance from some teachers, Orozco aligned himself with Board President Kevin LaChapelle and Vice President Bill Tayler and championed a plan designed to increase student achievement. They knew this would be a challenge in light of a $200,000 budget deficit facing the school for the 2010-2011 school year. Through some restructuring, they closed that budget gap.
The strategy to improve the 2010 API scores included:
- Intrinsic motivation techniques
- Utilizing student data to focus the efforts
- Supplement the academic program with weekend tutoring sessions
- Parental involvement and support
- Proactive collaboration between staff, 6-6 Program, Eagle Explorer Club, Family Movie Nights
Promise Charter school is committed to seeing student achievement continue to climb over the next five years. Orozco attributes the success to the students, their committed parents, and the staff at Promise Charter School.

Three Students Take Part in ICO Gift Wrapping
Today three fifth graders, Ana Julian, Ana Cristina Pena, and Wendy Galvan had the opportunity to help out at the annual ICO gift-wrapping table at the REI store in Encinitas. They did a GREAT job and really liked being a part of this worthy cause. Talking to the customers and wrapping gifts seemed to come so naturally for all three of them. As a reward, after the event, they stopped off at the beach in Cardiff. "It was truly the best Christmas Eve I’ve ever had," said Bill Tayler, who coordinated this event. Bill also noted that this truly was a great experience for the girls – exposure to a part of San Diego they don’t get to see very often, and people from a different walk of life talking to them, thanking them and making them feel very appreciated. Bill also commented that the REI customers, who tend to be outdoorsy and supportive of ICO’s mission, really showed them a lot of kindness.
"I feel so fortunate to have that kind of positive energy in my life," said Bill. If you are interested in supporting or becoming a part of these incredible opportunities to impact our young people, you may contact Bill via email.
